SUMMARY:Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation’s Knotless Netting Bag Workshop with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:Join the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation to practice processing dogbane sticks to extract the fiber and make sample cordage\, and then begin a small bag using hemp string supplied by the instructor. Knotless netting is a world-wide technique that involves various looping structures made with local fibers threaded on a needle. In California\, traditional suitable fibers include dogbane\, milkweed\, iris\, stinging-nettle\, and agave. Participants must bring: scissors\, pocket knife\, as well as lunch. Instructor Bio: Charlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and other traditional basketry techniques. He has taught for the Point Reyes Field Institute\, East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden\, the Laguna Environmental Center in Santa Rosa and in many schools and at teacher trainings. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the Bay Model in Sausalito\, Lake County Museum\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross. The nursery sales will include fruit trees and perennials\, and advice in building your productive and beautiful 2025 garden. The antique cider press will be operating from 11 am onwards\, and apple tasting will start at 11:30 AM. Donations welcome. Music from local folk band Jam Nation will begin at noon\, and an expert talk on fruit tree care will begin at 1 PM. Join us to celebrate and help build our green future together! Betty will discuss planning your garden\, pre-planting preparation\, plant selection\, establishment\, irrigation or not\, and on-going pruning and maintenance. After the talk and questions\, we will discuss more details about maintenance with a tour through the Laguna Environmental Center garden. Bring your hat! \nBetty Young has been managing native plant nurseries for 40 years since graduating from UC Davis. Seventeen of those years were with the Golden Gate National Parks\, and the last 10 years as the Nursery Chair for the California Native Plant Society\, Milo Baker Chapter. During that time\, she has become involved in native plant gardening as a way to expand habitat from our dwindling natural area into our own gardens. Charlie will present on research conducted by volunteers using passive integrated transponders to monitor water quality and track coho salmon movement in the Laguna de Santa Rosa. The Laguna is not traditionally thought of as salmon habitat\, but may be important to the recovery of these endangered species.
