SUMMARY:Abstract Artists Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:Abstract Artists Laboratory is a space to meet and create together. Finding the time to paint is always a challenge and if it has been months or years since you have painted there can be a palpable hurtle standing in one’s way of getting out those brushes and sitting down in front of a canvas. This space allows you the time and space without creating an at home art studio or needing to immediately go out and buy a plethora of materials. We will begin each session with a short meditation and then a brief and expressive experimental painting technique which will inspire freedom and movement in your painting. If you have a project that you would like to bring\, feel free. Gentle guidance\, inspirational ideas\, artwork images and materials will be provided. Reserve your spot. \nSaturday\, Jan. 6\, 10 am to 12:30 pm at Sebastopol Center for the Arts\, 282 South High St.\, Sebastopol. $35. (Every first Saturday at SebArts\, pre-registration required.)

SUMMARY:NBLA Holiday Open House Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:We have been having some version of this Holiday Open house event for over a decade. It’s a great time of the year to open up and share our space with the community and our friends\, hopefully make some new ones in the process. Our members also share a selection of their own works and available to discuss the process. There will be items for sale ranging from cards\, small notebooks to larger framed prints\, and everything in between. \nIn tandem\, a portion of our Corita Kent Spotlight Month will remain up through the month\, this includes the silent auction fundraiser with 27 items from 9 artists and organizations. The sale of these items are critical in supporting our annual fundraising goal\, and there are some amazing pieces featured\, including original signed and framed Corita Kent print\, and an original Jose Posada print that is over a 100 years old. \nFor a preview of the silent auction and to bid or buy early\, it’s all online at the link below\, and end’s 12/13:\nhttps://givebutter.com/c/coritarules \nWe would love to see some from our community come out and support the notion that “words matter” and the original social media still can get like’s and follows.

SUMMARY:WATER
DESCRIPTION:The current show\, WATER\, at Sebastopol Gallery\, encompasses a selection of current and past works by Sonoma County ceramicist\, Chris Boyd\, and Sonoma County expressionist painter\, Paula Matzinger.\nFrom small mountain streams to the Pacific Ocean\, Paula Matzinger is drawn to water. Water finds its way into many of Paula’s paintings\, from the reflection of light and color in the water of a small pond\, to the patterns of waves and foam on a beach\, to the glistening paths winding through a marsh.\nChris Boyd\, long time ceramic artist and teacher\, can often be seen at the coast collecting seaweed to decorate her thrown vessels and sculpted salmon.  She also incorporates cow dung\, saw dust and many dried materials like orange and banana peels and walnut shells to create the color patterns and smokey appearance absorbed into the clay. Our tides and rivers are reflected in her ceramics in the swirling appearance left by the fire.\nReception: December 9\, 4pm to 6pm.

SUMMARY:Seasonal Natural Dye Workshop w/ Sue Ellen McCann
DESCRIPTION:Dye plants have been used for thousands of years in arts and crafts and are just as relevant today as in the past. Whether your creative process includes weaving\, embroidery\, knitting\, hooking\, stitching\, mending\, sewing or any of the other creative ways to explore fiber\, this class is for you. Natural colors can be vivid to subtle and can be manipulated for color value\, hue and saturation. Using natural dyes can also reduce our impact on the environment and teach us more about our landscape\, botany\, chemistry and native plants.\nSeasonal Natural Dye Workshop – Fall 2023 is the first in a series of natural dye workshops to be offered over the span of a year to aid in the gathering and harvesting of natural dye plants as they become available in our surrounding landscape. The use of native plants in the workshop will be augmented by “garden variety” plants that can be easily grown in your garden.\nIn this Fall workshop\, we will be working with a silk/wool sports weight wool and wool rovings and will create dyes from walnuts\, curly dock\, hollyhocks\, elderberry\, cosmos\, white sage and dyers chamomile. You will learn about growing and/or gathering each of these plants\, how to prepare the wool to be dyed with three different mordants\, how to create the dye baths and dye the wool\, how to modify our colors for value\, hue and saturation and how to record your process and findings.\nAbout the Instructor: Sue Ellen McCann has 15 years of experience making and using natural dyes in her artwork. She currently uses her threads to create small needlepoint tapestries. She has an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and studied fiber arts and natural dyes at the Maiwa School of Textiles in Vancouver. Her art practice includes fine and fiber arts and she has an interest in botany and permaculture. Recently\, she acted as the interim executive director for SebArts and is a painter and printmaker.

SUMMARY:Oil and Cold Wax Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Cold wax medium has become very popular because of it’s ability to extend and add body to oil paint\, it’s ability to speed up drying time\, increase transparency and workability. It also doesn’t require any special set up or ventilation\, and allows you to build up very exciting textural effects and layers.\nThis course is for beginners through intermediate students (though advanced students are welcome too). I am used to running multi-level workshops that serve everyone’s needs and goals.\nSpecifically this workshop will cover:\nCWM/Oil how to’s: proportions\, solvents\, mediums\, surfaces to use\, Tools and how to use them effectively: Brayers\, silicone tools\, brushes\, palette knives\nTechniques covered: Foundational layers for optimal results\, Techniques and decision making through the rest of your layers: Texture imprints\, Using RF pigment sticks\, Dry pigment and how to use it safely\, Adding collage\, Dry mark making and mark making in general\, Glazing and veils of color\, Composition guidelines to help you when you get stuck\, Color theory and color mixing to take some of the guess work out of what to choose next\nWhat you’ll come away with:\nConfidence in how to best work with the medium\, An understanding of the process of working in CWM/Oil from start to finish\, A stronger understanding of composition and color\, An ability to avoid common pitfalls like muddy color\, overly opaque surfaces\, How to reference a photo and how to work with no source image\nAndrea’s Workshop Philosophy\nEven though working intuitively is a blast\, it comes with it’s challenges. My aim is to help you keep your intuition alive and well\, while also giving you the tools and technique to be able to step back from what you’re creating and make informed decisions.\nBeyond the pure technical aspects of CWM/oil\, having a few composition tools up your sleeve will give you the ability to answer the questions I hear so often from students: Where do I go from here? Something is off with this painting\, but what is it? Is this painting finished? What color should I choose for the next layer?\nThink how great it will feel to have so much confidence in your own process that you can stand back at any moment and know what your painting needs and why.\nI help you see when it’s time to PLAY and when and how to stand back to move forward. The combination of intuition\, play and\, technical understanding and analysis is what helps you build up consistent skill.\nAbout the Instructor: Andrea Wedell has been painting and exhibiting her work for thirty years in the US and Europe. Her training is in fine art\, teaching and coaching. Andrea weaves both her deep knowledge of painting\, her expertise in adult learning and coaching to nurture the artists she works for\, helping them build technique\, confidence and their singular voice. She was born into a family of artists\, has always had a deep respect for the creative process and self-expression.\nAndrea’s Youtube Channel for free content on oil and cold wax and composition.\nAndrea’s comprehensive online course on Mastering Abstract Composition

Copper Wimmin were featured on Democracy Now and their song Bleeding Rivers was featured on the Showtime Television series The L Word. In 2006 Kiranjot refocused her career around Indian classical music and spent five years living and studying under the guidance of her beloved teacher Dr. Ustad Narindar Singh in Amritsar\, India. No longer interested in performance where the audience is separate from the performer\, Kiranjot brings together her early experiences of community singing with Sweet Honey in the Rock and Bobby McFerrin with her love of Indian Classical music and the Kirtan tradition. From her travels through India to Chile and back she discovered that her favorite thing in this world is using her voice to inspire everyone to use their voices for quieting the mind\, surrendering to presence and revolutionary self-love. \nKiranjot invites everyone to be transformed by the healing power of their own voice as well as the practice of singing together as ONE. \nKim Atkinson:\nAs a professional percussionist\, Kim has worked with Master musicians and Dancers from the US\, Africa\, the Caribbean and Brazil since 1976. He has performed at such prestigious venues as the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival\, Brazilian Grand Carnaval Balls\, Stern Grove Summer Music Festival and Harrah’s Club in Reno\, Nevada. In 2004\, Kim performed and facilitated with Micky Hart’s “Planet Drum” holding the groove for over 4000 drummers. This is now the Guinness World Record for the most people playing the same song.\nCurrently\, Kim teaches young children the wonders of Body Rhythm\, teaches high school students World Percussion music\, accompanies poets and kirtan singers\, leads his own Brazilian style parade group\, does freelance percussion work\, teaches West African Music\, takes people on vision quests to Havasupai AZ\, and is learning to play new instruments\, including acoustic guitar and the most challenging drum in the world : East Indian Tabla. \nRachel Balunsat is a Visionary Abstract artist. She studied Las Bellas Arts at La Universidad de Granada and UCSC. But she fell uninspired as the world got more chaotic. Eventually she became a student of Tibetan Buddhism and after several long retreats\, Rachel finally felt a calling to paint Buddhas and Goddesses from her heart and was re-inspired. She was blessed with the name Dolma\, Tibetan name for Green Tara\, by her Lama. Soon after\, Studying with Visionary painter Amanda Sage sent her into a cathartic soul portrait which unleashed yet another direction following inner guidance. Dolma’s paintings have now become abstract renderings of her inner world expressing itself through color and movement\, spontaneity and playfulness.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for “Sonoma County Landscape” Paintings by Charles Beck
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 9\, 2023. 3:00-5:00pm\nLocation: Laguna Environmental Center\, 900 Sanford Road\, Santa Rosa\, CA 95401\nFREE. No RSVP necessary. Light refreshments provided.\nhttps://OpeningReceptionCharlesBeck.eventbrite.com \nExhibit Overview: Esteemed artist\, Charles Beck\, is featuring his large-scale paintings of Sonoma County’s coastal and inland areas in this new art exhibit “Sonoma County Landscape” on display at the Laguna Environmental Center\, September 9 – December 22\, 2023. \nArtist Statement: These paintings come from many hikes and long bike rides through the valleys\, coastal hills and cliff edges of Sonoma County. Although “places” are recognizable in some of them\, they are not a portrait of an area but more a collective vision and experience from my wanderings. As I paint\, many shapes and colors change over a long period of working on a canvas in the studio. Eventually\, but not always\, the painting elements coalesce into a good geometry and composition\, while the light and dark and the color all come together to make a good painting. If not\, despite countless hours spent on a canvas\, it all gets painted a solid white and I start again. \nAbout the Artist: Charles Beck is a longtime resident of Occidental and welcomes visitors to his home studio during Art at the Source\, Sonoma County Art Trails\, and by appointment. Beck has exhibited his artwork in galleries and museums across the state and the country. In 2005\, twenty of his large paintings were exhibited at Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Systems in Palo Alto. Please visit his website for more details: http://artofcharlesbeck.com/ \nThe Heron Hall Gallery & Gift Shop exhibits three shows per year of local\, nature-themed art. Sales support the Laguna Foundation. Due to the multiple uses of Heron Hall\, the gallery is open by appointment only. Please schedule a time to see the exhibit by contacting Maggie Hart: maggiehart@lagunafoundation.org

SUMMARY:Hand-made Gifts: Create Your Own Heirloom Pendant!
DESCRIPTION:Located in the Painting/Drawing Studio at SebArts\nDo you enjoy creating hand-made gifts for your loved ones? Learn how to work with beautiful vitreous (glass) enamel colors fired on fine silver and set in sterling silver. We will texture (using stamps) and dome fine silver discs. Enamel will be applied to the surface by wet packing the enamels (a mixture of water and enamel powder).\nIt takes several firings to build and blend your colors and 24k gold foil can be incorporated. The enamel jewels will be set in sterling settings with the possible addition of gemstones to create a unique pendant or earrings that will become Heirloom Jewels.\nThe enamel kiln is courtesy of a grant by the Enamellist Society.\nAbout the Instructor:\nAnita Selinger has an art education degree from New York University and a jewelry design degree from Fashion Institute of Technology. For 45 years she has supported herself using modelmaking\, enameling\, and fabrication skills to create one-of-a-kind custom orders and limited-edition jewelry. Teaching for 40 years has been a great pleasure for her as she treasures the enthusiasm of her students as they create. Her workshops include wax modeling and enameling taught in her studio in Santa Rosa\, the Crafts Students League in NYC\, Chimera Arts in Sebastopol\, and the Mendocino Art Center.
